Flagyl Dosage

Strengths are available in 500mg, 375ng, 750mg, 500mg/100mL Flagyl 500mg is the more commonly used and available version.
There is no controlled data available for Flagyl usage during pregnancy in humans. Data from animals studies has not revealed any evidence of fetal harm. The FDA has issued a category B pregnancy to Flagyl and the manufacturer has not made any personal recommendations for use during pregnancy for humans.
Metronidazole is recommended to not be used during breastfeeding unless because it is known to be excreted into human milk. If it is absolutely necessary to use the drug for the sake the of well-being of the mother, the mother may pump store their milk for 24 hours after Flagyl intake and their infants can take the stored milk meanwhile.
Usual dose for adults for treatment of bacterial infection is:
Loading dose: 15mg/kg IV
Maintenance dose: 7.5 mg/kg IV every 6 hours
Duration: 7 to 10 days
Usual dose for adults for treatment of Amebiasis is:
750mg orally 3 times a day for 5 to 10 days.
Usual dose for adults for treatment of Amebic liver abscess is:
500 to 750mg orally 3 times a day for 5 to 10 days.
Usual dose for Pseudomembranous Colitis:
500mg orally 3 times a day for a duration of 10 days
Usual dose for Surgical Prophylaxis:
Initial dose:15mg/KG IV
Usual dose for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease:
Loading dose: 15 mg/kg IV
Maintenance dose: 7.5 mg/kg IV every 6 hours
Oral: 7.5 mg/kg orally every 6 hours
Maximum dose: 4 g per day
Usual duration of therapy: 7 to 10 days
Flagyl dosage for Diverticulitis
Loading dose will be 15 mg/kg IV and maintenance dose will be 7.5mg/kg IV every 6 hours.
An oral dose of 7.5 mg/kg orally every 6 hours. Maximum dose allowed for Flagyl is 4g per day with usual therapy being 7 to 10 days.

Flagyl For Dogs

Flagyl is also used to treat bacterial infections in dogs just like it is used for humans. Flagyl for dogs should be given with food because it will increase the rate of absorption. Give the dose to your dog as soon as possible after the diagnosis and prescription and in case you miss a dose, the next one should be taken at its regular schedule.

Flagyl Side Effects

Anger
blurred vision
burning, numbness, tingling, or painful sensations in the hands or feet
changes in speech patterns
confusion
convulsions
dizziness
drowsiness
fever
hallucinations
headache
lack of coordination
nausea
seizures
stiff neck or back
unsteadiness, trembling, or other problems with muscle control or coordination
unusual tiredness or weakness
weakness in the arms, hands, legs, or feet

Some other less common side effects are:
Black, tarry stools
blood in the urine or stools
body aches or pain
clumsiness or unsteadiness
the difficulty with breathing
ear congestion
the feeling of pelvic pressure
frequent or painful urination
loss of voice
skin rash, hives, redness, or itching
sneezing
stomach and back pain (severe)
unusual bleeding or bruising

Flagyl And Alcohol

Flagyl and alcohol do not mix well and it is not recommended to drink while you are taking this drug. Mixing Flagyl alcohol can cause nausea, vomiting, flushing and server headache. IT can also lead to indigestion and abdominal distress. It also leads to the change in the taste of alcoholic beverages.
